History
ABATE of New Mexico,Inc. was founded in 1987 by a small group of motorcyclists who were concerned about the increasingly onerous rash of motorcycle legislations. We have a national affiliation under the umbrella or the National Coalition of Motorcyclists with over 400,000 members. Each year, you can count on your "right to freedom of the road" being limited even more. You no longer have the right to modify your scooter. (Ever notice the disclaimer on custom breathers and pipes that state "Not intended for street use"?) Have you noticed that cyclists are; becoming fair game for police harassment with an alarming frequency; that the courts have ruled that the use of roadblocks to stop drunk drivers is legal; that states are instituting a mandatory urine test to determine drug use; that communities are approving ordinance to limit access to certain streets by motorcycles; that laws are passed to prevent our right to have a mass gathering for the purpose of partying. The list is endless.
The question is, what can be done about it? A couple of things; you can REGISTER TO VOTE and you can JOIN ABATE. If you are not a registered voter, your opinion does not count. Organized legal application of pressure on the lawmakers, coupled with VOTES at the poll, CAN make the difference.
That is where ABATE comes in. Your financial and moral support will enable ABATE to accomplish our goals. Your signature as a registered voter on the petitions and letters will be evidence that motorcyclists will no longer remain silent and allow the establishment to legislate us out of existence. The old adage "United we stand, divided we fall" still applies. There is strength in numbers. Why else would government expend so much energy to keep us fragmented? We do have to remain the favorite target of two-bit politicians, attempting to advance their careers at our expense. The "Winds of change" are building but in which direction they blow depends on you!
